Doctoral thesis seminar for PhD student Ngo Quang Tao, majoring in Transport Mechanical Engineering, School of Mechanical and Automotive Engineering

On the afternoon of May 29th, 2025, School of Mechanical and Automotive Engineering (SMAE), Hanoi University of Industry (HaUI) organized a doctoral thesis seminar for PhD student Ngo Quang Tao. This seminar was chaired by Prof. Dr. Chu Van Dat, Military Technical Academy with the participation of many scientists and experts coming from SMAE, HaUI and those coming from other universities.

One of the core factors that create the reputation and quality of SMAE is the teaching staff. Currently, the School is proud to have more than 50% of its lecturers possessing high qualification, holding the title of Associate Professor and PhD degree. This is an impressive rate, reflecting the continuous investment in improving the quality of human resources, those who directly impart knowledge, inspire passion and orient the future for generations of students. In recent years, the School has always created the most favorable conditions for lecturers to continue studying and conducting scientific research, thereby constantly improving their professional qualifications and updating the latest technology trends.

Overview of Doctoral thesis seminar for PhD student Ngo Quang Tao

At the seminar, PhD student Ngo Quang Tao presented his research on the thesis with the topic "Research on the impact of weight on automobile fuel consumption". This research was conducted under the professional guidance of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thanh Quang and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Le Hong Quan, HaUI.

The thesis objective of PhD student Ngo Quang Tao is to analyze and evaluate the influence of car weight on fuel consumption, analyze factors related to weight such as structural design, manufacturing materials, load distribution... and their influence on fuel consumption on cars, thereby proposing solutions to use lightweight materials on car’ body. The research object is a 5-seat sedan Vios 2009.

The scope of the research is to focus on analyzing the relationship between car’ weight and fuel consumption in car under actual operating conditions and to study the simulation of using lightweight materials to replace the body shell to reduce the car’s weight. The research results of the thesis have built a scientific basis for calculating and simulating the impact of weight on fuel consumption in car. A methodology for experimental research to determine fuel consumption in actual driving conditions of car on the road has been developed. The topic is also suitable for the current trend of the global automobile industry. Car manufacturers continuously improve lightweight materials.

The Council highly appreciated the novelty, scientific and practical significance of the thesis and acknowledged its suitability to the Transport Mechanical Engineering Major. Experts also gave comments to improve the thesis, focusing on some points that needed to be revised.
