PhD candidate Nguyen Duy Trinh successfully defended the university-level doctoral dissertation

On the afternoon of October 24th, 2025, at the School of Mechanical and Automotive Engineering (SMAE), PhD candidate Nguyen Duy Trinh successfully defended his university-level doctoral dissertation in Mechanical Engineering. The defense attracted the attention of numerous scientists, lecturers, and PhD candidates from both inside and outside the university.

Under the supervision of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hoang Tien Dung - SMAE’s Rector, PhD candidate Nguyen Duy Trinh conducted the dissertation titled: “Research on improving surface quality in magnetic polishing of Ti-6Al-4V alloy.” This is a highly applicable research direction, which aims to improve machining efficiency and product quality in industries requiring high precision, such as aerospace, medical technology, and national defense.

Ti-6Al-4V alloy is a strategic material with superior mechanical properties; however, its finishing process poses numerous technical challenges. The dissertation developed a novel magnetic polishing method (MRF), incorporating an improved Halbach magnetic array configuration to enhance polishing force, increase material removal efficiency, and achieve nanometer-level surface roughness. Simultaneously, the study formulated an environmentally friendly polishing solution using green components such as Fe₃O₄, SiO₂, H₂O₂, and malic acid. This contributes to minimizing health and environmental impacts, aligning with sustainable manufacturing trend. Furthermore, the mathematical model developed in the dissertation allows for the accurate prediction of polishing performance, supporting process optimization and opening up potential for widespread application in high-tech sectors.
