SETSM 2025: Global Connectivity – Interdisciplinary Innovation – Practical action for a smart and sustainable manufacturing future
Taking place for the second time at the School of Mechanical and Automotive Engineering (SMAE), Hanoi University of Industry (HaUI), The second International Conference on Sustainability and Emerging Technologies for Smart Manufacturing 2025 (SETSM 2025) continues to affirm its position as one of the prestigious annual academic forums in the region and the world. This year, nearly 250 works by scientists from 10 countries (including the Federal Republic of Germany, the Russian Federation, India, Korea, China, Japan, Serbia, Vietnam, Taiwan, France and Malaysia...) have brought many new and interdisciplinary researches, clearly reflecting the movement of modern production under dual pressures: digital transformation and green development. The conference contributes to orienting comprehensive innovative thinking from materials, technology to production organization to find solutions to the problem of developing smart and sustainable industry in the new era.
The second International Conference on Sustainability and Emerging Technologies for Smart Manufacturing 2025 takes place on April 22, 2025 at HaUI.
The inevitable trend of modern industrial production
Assoc.Prof.Dr. Pham Van Dong, Vice Rector of HaUI delivered the welcome speech about the trend of digital transformation and smart industry at the plenary session of SETSM 2025
At the plenary session of the SETSM 2025 International Conference, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pham Van Dong - Vice Rector of HaUI stated that: In the era of digital transformation, the global industrial manufacturing industry, especially the fields of Mechanics, Mechatronics and Automobile, is entering a period of comprehensive restructuring under the impact of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. The rapid development of smart technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning, Internet of Things (IoT), Big Data, along with the emergence of large-scale software systems such as ChatGPT, Copilot and Gemini, ... are completely changing the traditional way of production. Production processes are now not only digitized and connected, but also moving towards large-scale personalization (mass customization). Along with that are the increasing requirements for operational efficiency, flexibility and sustainable development. The deep integration between physical-digital systems and the application of AI and ML into the production value chain has become an inevitable trend in the digital age, setting new standards for a smart - flexible - lean - green and highly adaptive industry.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hoang Tien Dung - Rector of SMAE (Standing second from the left) emphasized the role of interdisciplinary connection in sustainable development.
In this context, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hoang Tien Dung - Rector of SMAE said that the requirement for smart manufacturing systems that can adapt flexibly, optimize resources and minimize emissions is becoming the focus of the development strategies of many countries and businesses. This requires a comprehensive innovative mindset from product design, material selection, to the organization of the production line and product life cycle. This is an opportunity for businesses to demonstrate their innovation capacity and affirm their commitment to sustainable development in a global business environment that is "greening" every day. To implement that strategy, businesses are forced to invest more in research and development of clean technology, energy saving and promoting the circular economy.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hoang Tien Dung also emphasized that in the context of the world facing a series of environmental and energy challenges, connecting the international scientific community to share knowledge, transfer technology and cooperate in research is becoming more urgent than ever. The most outstanding feature of SETSM 2025 is its interdisciplinary feature and direct solution of practical problems. This clearly demonstrates the inevitable trend in research thinking: from single discipline to multidisciplinary - interdisciplinary - transdisciplinary integration, between fields such as mechanics, information technology, energy, materials and automation - in line with the spirit of modern science and technology.
New technology for smart and sustainable manufacturing
With nearly 250 submissions from domestic and international authors, the acceptance rate at SETSM 2025 was only 37%, demonstrating a rigorous review and selection process, ensuring high academic quality and practical value.
Mr. Uwe Wedler - General Director of Asia-Pacific region, Federal Republic of Germany presented the paper "Innovative CNC Approaches Driving E-Mobility and Smart Factory Transformation"
Three outstanding studies presented at the plenary session of the SETSM 2025 International Conference have opened up new technological trends, attracting attention and heated discussions from experts. Mr. Uwe Wedler - General Director of Asia - Pacific Region, Federal Republic of Germany introduced advanced CNC technology solutions to promote the production of electric vehicles (e-mobility) and the transformation of smart factories. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Karupukhin Kirill - NAMI Russian State Scientific Research Center, shared experiences in developing and applying the range extension system for electric vehicles in the Russian Federation. Meanwhile, Prof. Aleksandar Ašonja - University Business Academy in Serbia presented research on biomass energy from agricultural by-products, aiming at developing local-scale renewable energy, associated with regional agricultural characteristics.
Assoc.Prof.Dr. Karupukhin Kirill – NAMI Russian State Scientific Research Center introduced the research “Range Extenders for electric vehicles. The experience of development and application in the Russian Federation”
Prof. Aleksandar Ašonja, University Business Academy in Serbia presented on the topic “Research Into the Energy Potential of Vine Pruning Residues in Western Serbia”
At the conference, scientists, experts, practitioners and students from many countries, together with representatives of leading training and research institutions in Vietnam, exchanged and discussed the latest scientific research results, thereby promoting research and application of sustainable technology in modern production. In particular, the prominent topics include: smart manufacturing and industry 4.0; lean manufacturing 4.0; supply chain 4.0; real-time simulation and optimization; rapid manufacturing and cloud-based manufacturing; sustainable design and manufacturing; renewable energy and clean energy; advanced materials engineering; additive manufacturing - 3D printing; mechatronics and robotics; smart technology, devices and systems; advanced materials technology and chip design, biomedical engineering, information and communication technology.
The conference was organized with 03 main sessions, including 02 plenary sessions and 01 poster presentation session, divided into 15 parallel sub-committees, combining in-person and online formats.
The new technologies discussed at SETSM 2025 not only reflect the spirit of the dual transformation era: comprehensive digitalization and sustainable green development, but also demonstrate the global determination to reshape modern manufacturing towards smart, flexible and environmentally friendly.
The SETSM 2025 International Conference is a clear demonstration of the sustainable, practical and long-term visionary science and technology development strategy of SMAE. As an organizing and leading academic unit, the School is gradually affirming its position as a pioneering interdisciplinary research and training center in the field of smart industry and sustainable technology.
From creating an open academic environment, connecting deeply with the global research community, to promoting practical applied research directions, SMAE is proactively contributing to the process of "greening" the production industry, gradually realizing the goal of developing Vietnam's industry in a modern, integrated and responsible direction. This is one of the prerequisites for SMAE to build a training - research - application ecosystem reaching the regional level, approaching international standards. SETSM not only contributes to enhancing the school's academic position, but also strongly spreads the spirit of liberal science, innovative thinking and commitment to accompany the sustainable future of modern production.
